Geek Lust

Sunday, January 15th, 2006 | Geeking | No Comments

I have quite a few non-geek friends. They’re cool, in a totally non-tech way. They do things like have picnics, and discus politics and can walk past computer shops without leaving heavy breathing marks on the clean glass windows.

Yesterday, one of my non-geek friends bought a new laptop and a new iPod Photo. And then waited until TODAY to install music on it. The virgin earphones were still sitting neatly in the iPod case, the installation CD still had the copy-protection sticker on it.

For me, that would be the ultimate in masochism.

To buy technology, then sit and look at the box knowing full well that the little bit of geek-lust is sitting inside waiting to be lovingly fondled. I just couldn’t help myself. I’d be ripping at the box like a starving chihuahua hunting for a pork chop. Much with the tearing and the scratching with the fingernails.
Must. Get. To. Ipod

Gimme!! iPod!? Gimmme….

So, when my friend turned around to ask me for a favor, I said yes even before she’d finished the sentance.

“Why, I’d love to help you put music on your iPod.” No, really, the pleasure is all mine.

AJ: Come or I will shot you (c;

Me: You will shot me?
Does that involve a DeLorian Flux Capacitor and some mad scientist with bushy white eyebrows?
Am coming… Or Have I already arrived?

(Too much coffee for me, I think)

.dll files

Mr Frog and I have just bought a new PC. It stands there, tall and proud, but just a little vulnerable. I’ve taken it for a spin on the net (Behind NAT) without any anti-virus, and quite frankly, the risks excited me.

I was prone to so many evil nasties, that my fingers simply tingled on the mouse. It’s my way of ‘Living Dangerously’ without risking life or limb.

In any case, Mr Frog decided that I was being foolhardy and pulled out the network cable -
“Until we get some decent antivirus software.”

I couldn’t really argue with that kind of logical reasoning. As far as software goes, I quite like Trend, hate the resource hogging Nortons, but I’m looking at getting AVG. Anyone had any experiences with it?

With the impending arrival of a home broadband connection, my PC will appreciate any attempt I make at warding off the script-kiddies and the port scanners.

I also like getting computer-security-related emails from my friends. I sometimes feel like a professor at Hogwarts - in tune with the mystical dark arts of digital networking. They email me asking the damnedest things. My friends entertain and amuse me in so many ways.

Do you know what .dll files are?
I have some infecting my C:\ …. do you think it’s safe to
delete them?

See, if your computer had hands, it would be thinking about slapping you.

It’s comments like these that make me feel a little secure about my role in society. As long as there are computers, there will be people required to fix them.

Microsoft do it again.

Microsoft to enter Anti-Virus Industry

In the end, consumers and businesses should be free to decide whether they’re okay paying for a security service offered by the same company responsible for creating the problems in the first place.

Hmmm. Yet another reason why my next computer will be a Mac.

I’m tired of packing boxes. I’m tried of paperwork.

To celebrate this alarming apathy toward the immigration process, I’m eating a KitKat.

“What type of encryption level is used on website.com?”

“huh?”

“En-cryp-tion”

“It is encrypted. Isn’t it?”

“Um. Not from where I’m standing”

“Oh, well, we didn’t do it that way because it would cost an extra £400″

“Pardon”

“Yeah! I know! £400!”

- - - - - - -

“This isn’t encrypted! WHY isn’t this encrypted!”

“What’s not encrypted?”

“This transaction! All this stuff, its free-floating!”

“Well, it’s not that bad, is it?”

*nervous laugh*
“Not at all”

- - - - - - - -

“Dude. You’re a techy. Please tell me why this isn’t encrypted!”

“I highlighted this problem almost 7 months ago, but, alas, nobody listens to me.”

“What do you mean?”

“Nobody listens. At all. I say something and they dont listen. I told them.”

*nervous laugh*
“So, it’s totally unencrypted?”

“I told them that. But they didn’t listen.”

“Oh. Shit.”
